Twenty years of sharing my life with diabetes
I developed diabetes the year between completion of college and beginning graduate education. Over the years I have been blessed to get to know many researchers and some of the finest diabetes clinicians. I think I have managed my diabetes well (at least based on the lack of vascular problems so far) and with less professional help that most diabetics. Here is what I have learned.
1. Eat when you are hungry. When you are satisfied stop eating.
2. Take generous daily antioxidant supplements, especially ascorbate (C)
and vitamin E.
3. Snack lightly between meals.
4. Eat what you want and drink wine for pleasure.
5. All people with IDDM are either professional diabetics or denial diabetics.
6. Drink a lot of water.
7. Talk about your diabetes management with your friends and family. There is no shame in this disease. But keep an eye out so you won't bore them.
