When you have been diagnosed with diabetes, you may be angry, you may be scared, but it is not the end of your life. Diabetes occurs when the insulin your body produces does not control blood sugar. This means that your body does not produce enough insulin or does not effectively use the insulin that is there. Just like a plant that receives too much water or not enough, either condition compromises health and vitality.

In Type 1 diabetes, your own body attacks the beta cells in the islets of langerhans and destroys your potential for insulin production.

With Type 2 diabetes, your body is not able to properly use the insulin that your body produces. Medical experts do not know the exact cause of Type 2 diabetes. They do, however, know that Type 2 diabetes runs in families. A person can inherit a tendency to get Type 2 diabetes. But it usually takes another factor such as obesity to bring on the disease.
